Google announced it has cut about 6% of its workforce, amounting to 12,000 jobs – the largest-ever round of layoffs at the company. This follows other recent job cuts at other tech firms, including Microsoft, Amazon and Meta, the parent company of Facebook. Correspondent Michael George talks with experts about how the tech sector, unlike other parts of the economy, is being downsized after having gone on a pandemic hiring spree.

I dont feel bad at all. How many times would you see a post about "the daily workday at "big tech company name". Where they do maybe an hour of work and the rest of the day just ushit

Tech is just right-sizing (their term for downsizing), but they have to make sure their cuts don’t stop innovation, tech companies without new products are tech companies in future trouble

The reason smaller startups are still hiring is because if they properly evaluate-the state of their company in this economy, they’d have to close down shop. But entrepreneurs don’t like to let go so easy

Why is the ceo of google not stepping down for making erratic decisions that affect innocent less paid workers. His decision has a bigger impact on their lives especially those with families, mortgages. He on the other hand remains in his position, and lines his pocket that benefit him

Love how they went to some woke former employee wearing a mask outside and calling herself "Isaac" even though she's clearly a woman. Obviously she was a diversity hire.

You also need to look at the increases in hiring during the couple of years fueled by the pandemic. Sure, the absolute amount looks large at ~10k~12k, but when you look at the relative amount at ~5% of these companies, that's not very much -- companies can always find areas to cut where departments aren't efficient with staffing or projects aren't worth the investment. Yes, if you're one of those that are impacted, that really sucks to lose your job, but most companies offer severance and government unemployment benefits, and as noted in the segment, unemployment is relatively low, so there are jobs out there. Good luck, but also, this isn't a "the world is ending" scenario.
