Nothing happens without the permission of Allah may He be Exalted. If a Muslim has been afflicted, then Allah has permitted it to happen because He wishes for you to return to Him. And because He test the believers and the hardship you go through will benefit you on the day of judgment.

It is a test from Allah like any other test. Maybe you're pious or maybe you have low imaan but it's so you can call out to Allah.
