As a MUSICIAN who chose to play a bass over a guitar, I can say that they are really similar and the skills are translatable. Yes he is playing a melody and lead type of line but, I also enjoy playing melodies and solos on bass. To me, bass is my piano. I'll play whatever I want on it. No rules unless you have a specific job to do in a band setting. I am a solo artist and like 7 string basses. Great instruments
