So Basically if you factory reset your MacBook 2012 then you will go back to older operating system near by 10.8 if you got 10.9 you are lucky
but for latest operating system required 10.9 or later
so have to go by these steps
first update to 10.11.6 then update to 10.15.1

from 10.11.6 to 1o.15.1 watch this video

finally someone that knows what they are talking about! good job. I put two new samsung 860 EVO SSD's into my mac mini 2012 and and went into recovery mode and downloaded mountain lion, then updated to el capitan going on to download mac os catalina all beucase my hard drives crashed in raid 0, but now I am in raid 1 and I plan to back up my raids... somehow.

I realized that when I go to apple site with the Catalina upgrade, It is says their that first install El Capitan in order to move to Catalina.. and wow I just missed reading it for a long time.
