Slavej is a Eugene and Seattle based Balkan folk music band consisting of Carol Silverman (vocal), Mark Levy (clarinet), Cody Simmons (trumpet and flugelhorn), Michael Lawson (accordion and vocal), and David Bilides (tapan). We just completed a one hour virtual video project for a Fulbright IIE Pre-departure Orientation for awardees teaching and doing research in Eurasia (mostly Eastern Europe) in 2021. Originally, we planned to perform live at a week-long event at the University of Oregon in July 2020 for 300 participants. Now, it is a virtual event to be held in September 2020. The orientation will also include lectures and panel discussions about the cultures, history, and politics of the region, led by Carol, who is a professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Folklore Program at the UO. In the videos, each musical piece is preceded by a short explanation of its context, background, and lyrics.

You can listen to the entire project at once or to any of the 7 videos separately.
