Ψηλά στην Πίνδο, οι πηγές του ποταμού Αώου σχηματίζουν μια λίμνη. Ο Αώος έχει τις πηγές του βόρεια του Μετσόβου και κατευθύνεται βορειοδυτικά. Περνάει από τα βουνά Σμόλικας και Γκαμήλα, διασχίζει τη χαράδρα του Αώου που είναι μία από τις μεγαλύτερες ελληνικές χαράδρες με μήκος 10 χλμ περίπου και βγαίνει στον κάμπο της Κόνιτσας. Από εκεί καταλήγει στην Αλβανία αφού πρώτα συναντά τα νερά των ποταμών Βοϊδομάτη και Σαραντάπορου και χύνεται τελικά στην Αδριατική.

High up on the mountain of Pindos in the north of western Greece, a lake is formed by at the springs of Aoos river. Aoos has its springs in the north of Metsovo and its direction is north-west. It passes from mountains Smolikas and Gamila, it crosses Aoos gorge, which is one of the biggest Greek gorges with about 10 km length and about 2.000 m depth, and it comes out in the plain of Konitsa. From there it leads to Albania after it meets the waters of rivers Voidomatis and Sarantaporos and it finally empties into the Adriatic sea.
