FF14 is kind of weird in a way that the majority of the community seems to be nicer than most other MMO's I've played, but the "crazy ones" we have are especially loud and aggressive.

I don't see the point of sending death threats to people, it just ruins the surprise.

The world would be such a better place with more level headed rational people like Josh in it.

Lack of ability to self-reflect leads to toxicity, because it's harder to ignore criticism when it's voiced by someone else than when it's your inner voice saying it.

I'm glad that this toxicity is only in games! Could you imagine what would happen if this whole toxic fandom thing got into politics?

the way josh explains himself is such a skill

The most insane xiv players are also those who don't even play it seriously, those who treat it as a second life and could do it in any other game.

I think its somewhat hard for OSRS players to pretend issues aren't there when they're acutely aware that if they ignore issues they'll have another RS3 appear.

I would love to see Josh make an EVE video about his adventure within the game. Similar to how he did Otherland. Just his experience from start to, well whatever he calls his "finish".

As a EVE Online r̶e̶c̶o̶v̶e̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ a̶d̶d̶i̶c̶t̶ player, I completely understand Josh's decision to not play EVE, though i would love to hear his critic of it

As an FFXIV player myself, honestly the vast majority of people I meet or interact with inside the game are fine-at-worst and I've only ever been in like 1-2 truly toxic party finders in my 3-4 years of playing, and those fell apart immediately. Great place to be in when you're there.

That said, it's the behavior of the people who go outside the game to either evangelize for it or demonize it that seem to have all the most concentrated vitriol, either via toxic positivity or a willingness to voice a murderous streak far too strong for what they're trying to defend. It gives the entire rest of the community a bad name and completely poisons the well of what otherwise could be one of the best MMO communities to actually play with.

As a FFXIV player, I agree that outside of the game you'll find more obnoxious and rude people than in game. I do encounter them while playing on occasion, but it's usually in content with more players in it like the 24-man Alliance raids, and large PvP battles like Frontline (72 players, 24 each of the 3 factions) I'm more likely to encounter them. FFXIV Twitter was especially bad because someone likes to kick the hornet's nest and start arguments so often, either through interpersonal drama or feeding the current doom scrolling topic of the week; not to mention the forums, reddit, and the youtube comments section of FFXIV content creators.

Having played for a few months now, I can safely say that FF XIV has been the kindest **casual** community i've ever experienced in MMOs. But i do agree that the hardcore fans are lowkey insane whenever someone talks bad about it.

I feel like this is a really common problem for so many people. They attach their beliefs/interests/hobbies to their sense of self so if anyone points out a flaw in the thing, it comes across as an attack on their identity.

As for your point about not liking and outsider dissing on their thing, in the tv show "Community" one of the the characters says it best when he says "Our school may be a toilet, but it's our toilet. Nobody craps in it but us."

Such a good level headed take Josh. FF14 just realizing it has a big player base, so more chance to get weird stalking angry people willing to harras you. And yeah people hear: "your game sucks so you and your life choices suck."

It’s really interesting that Josh states that that people within a community are more tolerant of criticism from others in their community than from people outside of it, then states he has gotten less pushback from OSRS players.

Josh, you are part of the OSRS community man.

As an Eve Online player of almost 7 years, I think you made the correct choice. Eve players are not really that toxic, but I have heard we have a different reference scale for toxicity than a lot of the rest of the world

I'm very hesitant to make a video about the problems I have with FFXIV because I know how crazy some of the people can be about it on social media channels. I've ended up leaving an entire discord before because someone threatened to doxx me because I said that crafting could be more friendly to new players by making a few more material crafting recipes cross-class. Not sure I want to open myself up to that energy again.

As an Eve player myself, I can almost assure you, that if you were to tear the game apart disparaging it right down to it's atoms, the response you would most receive is "fair enough". Eve online is a fantastic game but It's also a sunk cost fallacy simulator.

League of Legends is the most toxic community I've ever been a part of. I literally felt better about life once I quit.
