Gov.-elect Josh Stein was officially sworn in as North Carolina's 76th governor Wednesday, replacing Roy Cooper as the state's top executive.

Stein, who served as attorney general, defeated Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson in November's general election to succeed Cooper, who attended Wednesday's ceremony. A public inauguration ceremony for Stein and other statewide officials is set for Jan. 11 in Raleigh.

"I know that your passion for helping people burns bright and you have the smarts, the integrity and the grit to serve them well," Cooper said. "This job is about leadership, and you Gov. Stein, are a strong and effective leader. I will sleep well tonight knowing that I am your constituent and you are my governor."

Cooper officially transferred his power as North Carolina's governor to Stein during Wednesday's ceremony.

"I accept this great seal of the state of North Carolina and the power and duties it represents," Stein said. "May we all, working together, be a beacon of hope and progress for our nation." #News #ncpol #politics
