The GWM WEY Dream is a wild retro car from China

The GWM WEY Dream, known in China as the YuanMeng meaning 'realisation of a dream' is a plug-in hybrid that uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor for a combined output of 238hp and 520Nm. Its battery can provide up to 195 kilometres of electric driving range.

European and American emission and safety standards are used to keep Chinese cars offshore, which for the manufacturers is a good thing. Because China seems to have tapped into what a lot of car buyers want, which is a reliable, well built, and (equally important) good looking car. In Europe, we accept any old mundane looking crap as long as it has a badge we are familiar with on the bonnet. This is a great looking car, obviously based on the Ora Punk/Ballet Cat (Beetle copy) platform, with slight body changes to give it a '50's American look. On paper it sounds like a dogs dinner, yet in the metal....it works !

Given that Japan has proven that there's a desire for retro styled cars like the Nissan Figaro. Or those Mitsuoka versions of Micras that make them look like pre and post-war cars, the car that everyone's significant other would love.

I can see the potential for it. I personally wouldn't. It's too garish and slab nosed.

Would absolutely love to see some actual 30s streamlining in the design making a come back. Trim all that Americana fat!

I don't know if this is the future mobility on our streets, but the price-efficiency balance would decide.
I prefere - and would keep the long as possible - my hybrid.
