WWDC 2024 Keynote Impressions

Apple recently wrapped up their WWDC24 keynote and Leo Laporte talks with Mikah Sargent about the presentation of the newest reveals. From their personal intelligence system to the Passwords app, Apple seems to be positioning itself well for future products.

I tend to think they’ve triggered another Stage Manager by limiting AI on iPhone to the 15 Pro line. People are really pissed online bout this, and I find it a little strange because if it backfires and they don’t get the new phone rush they’re trying to engineer, it could harm their attempts at AI, or at least slow down their rate of improving it. You can be sure they have code in there that lifts patterns of behaviour that can fed into their research to improve AI. This could be done with differential privacy, but they still need the mass of data, and the more they have the better those data sets will be. We have to remember that they said they couldn’t; do Stage Manager on older devices, and it turned out they could but in more restricted ways. They also stole and redefined what AI strand for, Apple Intelligence.

I’ll wait and see how it plays out. This is a further lock-in attempt. Any why did they have to link OpenAI/ChatGPT into the OS? Serious privacy concerns.

As a developer, I would LOVE to be able to use the local model to process the data I give to it and be able to process that to a language friendly for the user, like the chat gpt marketplace

Weird how, after a major refresh to their iPad lineup, iPadOS barely gets any attention at WWDC.

I agree with Leo in that there is no way the iPhone 14 and 15 should not be able to handle all of the AI features coming up. And I think it may backfire on them to try to force people into a 15 pro or upcoming 16 model in order to get these features. If the Google Pixel with its inferior chip can handle the AI features it does, there’s no way the “regular” iPhone models can’t do it. I just bought a 15+ and I’m certainly not about to buy a new phone within the next year or two for a couple of features.

How is Apple’s “AI” going to work with pre-existing HomePod OG, the newer HomePod and the HomePod mini? I assume those will just use old Siri and not get the benefits even if one person in household has an iPhone 15 pro/max?

As someone that averages 129 workout min [green ring] a week the recovery metrics are important. We need to see if it is a true competitor to Woop’s HRV readiness scores. Are they surfacing internal metrics that are my signaling [adaptations| overtraining]
