I am very glad to have met with Henry Zhao on a late night at the Royal Oak folk pub in Edinburgh. I haven't heard anyone singing the talking blues live in the past 10 years I've been investigating the subgenre, and most importantly haven't heard anyone singing their *own* talking blues. I am very glad Henry agreed to have one song shared from my account. Follow the links below to support this very talented artist and more info about the full album (make sure to check his YT channel, full of wondrous live footages!):

Henry Zhao's eponymous debut album was recorded at a blistering speed - just over five weeks in July and August of 2019 at Native Music Studios, Los Angeles. A total of over 20 original songs were recorded, with just a dozen of the best songs making the cut. These songs include social satires like "Talkin' Dig-a-Moat Blues," sensitive ballads like "Plastic People Magazine Queen," and philosophical lamentations such as "All Alone 'Neath the Lamppost."

"Henry Zhao" was produced by Chad Watson, a Grammy-nominated bassist who is also featured on half of the album's tracks. Working alongside Chad is engineer Eddie Hedges, formerly of 90's alt-rock sensation Blessid Union of Souls. On fiddle, the album features Craig Eastman, who has recorded with the likes of Ray Charles and Hans Zimmer. On percussion, the lineup is rounded out by John Palmer, who has toured with best-selling artists around the world.

David Harvey, who showcases some of LA's top folk and country artists, says, "Henry Zhao is a bright young talent emerging in Folk Music. He reminds me of a young Bob Dylan with acoustic guitar and harmonica in the Coffee Shops of the 60's mashed with a string Celtic Music influence but singing on very contemporary topics. Henry is a young Folk Singer to watch."

The song is structured just like Dylan's talking blues. I'm hearing 1964 here!
