When people learn I LIVE IN NORWAY but DON'T SPEAK NORWEGIAN yet

I know I suck at learning Norwegian, but for my defense - every job I have done did nor require perfect English and, honestly, I haven't had time to attend courses. Not that I am proud of it, but it is what it is. I know I have to motivate myself more and try harder... I have to be less lazy and be more dedicated, because I know I ca do that!
Besides, I hate when people ask me this question and I cannot reply proudly that I am already fluent in Norwegian.

From a norwegian perspective: people here mostly speak english. That said, most native norwegians expect integration, by learning our language and culture. Mostly if a person is living here for many years at time, or staying permanent.. which i dont think differs for most other countries.. we also have a strong sense of social conduct, that some foreigners have a hard time adjusting to. Which is the reason foreigners may find it hard finding a long time group of friends.. But i know for a fact that you come a long way for trying your best to learn the language. People respect that. Especially when it comes to working here. Imagine being the person native, group of native having to switch from their language to their second language because of one persons inability to learn, or not wanting to learn the language.. most people here a polite about it though, they may not say anything, but they know.. try making friends in a country like Japan without kmowledge of the language.. good luck!

I want to move to Norway in the next few years, I’m been learning the language for about 1.5 years, but I’m hoping I’ll learn much faster and easier when I finally get there!

*Oh really?! Say something Norwegian then.*

It is difficult to learn it, the courses are super expensive and there is not enough material online to do it by yourself. The young people spek english so it is just a waste of time and effort learn a leanguage
