So what are you supposed to do if you experience a Tank Slapper?

That slap in between those trees at 60+ was gut wrenching.

When a tank slapper happens immediately let go of the bars, jump up and stand on the seat in the jesus pose and show the bike you will not bow down to its hissy fit.

That last guy went home in complete silence and 15 mph under the speed limit then immediately sold the bike

Just about the biggest adrenaline dump I’ve ever experienced was a tank slapper so violent that my hands broke the brake and the clutch levers clean off. I got lucky and stayed on the bike and limped it home but it took me several months to get rid of the fear. It was washboarding on the asphalt on a county road that made it happen so I just slowed down every time I went through there…

Also worth mentioning, your forks dampers are a huge part of lessening wobble that can turn into tank slappers. The forks take the energy that would send the wheel to the other side and turn it into heat in the fork oil. Tuning your suspension for your weight is necessary for a stable bike.

Bro why has it taken this long to find someone who can explain this especially so perfectly?

Hold on to the tank with your knees, loosen your grip, don't fight it, don't touch the brakes, and pray while the bike sorts itself out.

Back in the 70's in San Diego, I was driving home a Sportster I had just purchased, used, very used, and pretty much in the middle of an 8 lane freeway, the thing went into high speed (about 65) wobble. The bars where just slamming back and forth I hung on and it eventually straitened back out. The physics of what was happening was unbelievable. Scared the live'n cr*p out of me too.

Motorcycle stability actually comes from a gyroscopic effect from the wheels and some types of engines help also(vtwin). A "Tank slapper or high speed whooble" is actually the motorcycle trying to get stabilized after it has encountered a destabilizing force. Believe it or not slowing down usually makes it worse before it gets better....when in doubt throttle out 😅

I don't ride bikes, I'm not interested in bikes, and yet this channel is really really interesting to me. Nicely done.

leaning forward shifts the weight onto the front wheel which usually corrects it. a lot of people will tell you to keep your hands lightly on the handlebars or to take them completely off and rest them on the body of your bike until it stops.

I don’t ride a motorcycle, but I was road biking once and moved my hands down to the drops on my handlebars at the wrong time and bumped my elbow against my knee very hard and caused basically a tank slapper, just bicycle. It was terrifying and I thought I was going to die.

'go fast, don't die' I'll always remember that.
