Maroon Peak via the South Ridge (Class 3)

Maroon Peak is located in the Elk Mountains and ranks no. 25 among the Colorado 14ers (based on NAVD88). It was originally named Maroon Mountain by the 1874 Hayden Survey for its deep red-colored sandstone. It was later named (South) Maroon Peak when North Maroon Peak was recognized as an individual summit rather than just a prominent shoulder. Maroon Peak and North Maroon Peak are commonly known as the “Maroon Bells” for their peculiar shape resembling two ringing bells when viewed from Maroon Lake. They are among the most photographed mountains in North America.
Maroon Peak was officially first summited on August 28, 1908 by Percy Hagerman and Harold Clark via its Southwest Face.
