What happens at 28 weeks pregnant?

You realize it has been seven months before realizing you have two more to go.

I know that much, and how much more I have to go. Right now, all the baby is doing is growing.

Right now, the baby is between one and a half and two and a half pounds. The lungs are maturing and could even breathe on their own in many cases, especially if it is a girl.

Why a girl?

Girls tend to be smaller but have more mature lungs at this point, whereas boys put more energy into growth but have less mature lungs. But between artificial surfactants and oxygen masks, a baby born now of either gender has a decent chance.

I’d rather not have one this early in either case.

The baby is starting to look more like a cherub, laying down the layers of fat that define the face and help it not freeze to death outside of the mother.

The baby would be in an incubator or blankets.

I’ll say a newborn of any age has trouble regulating body temperature, and one born this early will be in an incubator at 98 degrees for weeks.

What is going on inside?

You’re probably going to feel more frequent and stronger Braxton Hicks contractions, in essence, practice contractions.

The doctor said that the difference between practice and the real thing is if they get stronger and closer together.

Your breasts are probably preparing for the baby too, starting to leak colostrum. You’ll get more formal milk later.

I did not think I’d need those nursing pads early.

The kid can open and close their eyes at this point. The kid has taste buds and ones this age have been seen sticking their tongues out.

Though except for amniotic fluid and their thumbs, there is not much to taste.

The kid should be shifting and turning, ideally into a head down position well before birth.

If he is not, I’ll be in that forward leaning inversion or other positions now, so I’m not on the operating table later.

You could also do sacral release positions and the sidelying release, though that’s not really something to worry about unless and until the kid is in the wrong position close to delivery time.

What else is going on with the kid?

The brain is developing, and they think kids are actually dreaming at this phase. The kid can also cough, suck on the thumb, hiccup and practice breathing, though it is all amniotic fluid now.
