Parametric modifiers Performance: 3ds Max vs Blender vs Houdini

preview_player
Показать описание
A comparission with a parametric modifier over a 3d scan in Houdini, blender and 3ds max.
The scan has 2M polys.
Plays fluid in 3dsmax (15 fps)
Houdini around 5fps.
Blender doesnt reach 2 fps at any point.

About interaction, is difficult to see on video, 3dsmax is totally responsive. Houdini is not so bad, with some lag, but workable, Blender is in this case a disaster with a huge lag.

Whats slowing Houdini down is the normal re-calucation. If you add a normal node before the bend, set it to points, crank the angle up to 180. Then turn off "Recompute affected normals" and "Preserve normal length" in the bend node then you should get similar performance to Max. I go from 5fps to 18fps with the same model. Not so obvious I know, thats Houdini for you. Maybe Max is doing something similar under the hood or maybe normal recalculation is done on the GPU or something.

I have only 3dsmax 2013 but did similiar tests. Blender (2.8) was performing siginificantly better than max up to 200k-400k Polygons.
Was there a huge viewport enhancement in max on the last version?

What is your pc specifications ?
can i render like this on a
gtx 1070 with i7 8th gen laptop ????

Max viewport is solid, but switching from edge to vertex to poly in edit mode takes forever. Biggest bottleneck for modeling for me.

it's me ... or in 3ds max the dragon is laughing??

IS that even with CUDA enabled?! I can't believe blender's so laggy!

The reason I'm not giving up on 3ds max yet

well it should be updated in Houdini 18

Blender doesn't handle editing highpoly well like Max or Houdini yet ..but the viewport can perform much better, so there is room for more improvements from what i have seen .
Once the developers do more investigation then it will be in a much better shape, it will give Max & Houdini a run for their money .

Houdini Bend SOP its not doing the same bend as 3ds max, smth must be wrong.

Cool video eloi, nitrous is a beast just a shame it’s so ugly...praying the max team do something to compete with evee and Max is perfection...oh yeah and lower the price/roll out indie

i'm switching from 3DS MAX to blender, because of autodesk . i can no more afford to use 3ds max (hope indie get rolled worldwide fast ), i love blender and all but it needs many years to catch with all the features of 3ds max :)

I love it! Well since almost every blender fan here brags about their precious viewport performance....why not just ask the devs to somehow bend the viewport instead of the object itself for much better performance! I m abit disappointed cuz i ve yet to see anyone talk about the atrocious import(/export?) in blender on 40+million poly obj/fbx files. Hope you'll do it soon buddy...cheers!

Great comparsion Eloi, but you are opening a can of worms here... ;-)

wow. It's a gamechanger. F**k houidini, I'm switching back to 3ds max.

This will be good, if only bending geometry was our main need in daily work. What about tests of usability, mass parameters chainges without script Listener, material workflow, animation workflow. constraints, dynamics, may be there is character animators who can tell that 3dsmax is the way to go? Or i want too much from archviz software?

this is bulshit! Houdini is the best, try pack geo in houdini, your performance around 20 FPS much faster in 3dsmax, I checked up now. Houdini is the best dcc aplication in entire world. #ilovehoudini #ilovesidefx

Sure 3ds Max has the best performance, but unfortunately it's viewport is very buggy, and the entire software is very unstable

long live blender, great performance :D
Parametric modifier is a big name for bend :D

I hope blender gets some big performance upgrades, this is just laughable, but I don't want to have to switch to max.
