It was actually Herculaneum that was buried under 20-25m of ash. Pompeii only got buried under about 7m because it’s further away from the volcano than Herculaneum and it’s less preserved.

Today, about a third of Pompeii is still underground. The portion of the city that has been unearthed is closely guarded but open to visitors. In 1997, the city was named a UNESCO world heritage site, granting it even more protection.

It took 2 days for Mount Vesuvius to finish it’s eruption and the Sky to mostly clear.
