Not a photo, not an artist's impression, it's a map.

The Gaia interview we all wanted.. Awesome! Thank you again Fraser for bringing the goods. And what an amazing communicator Dr. Barstow is.. white dwarves were kinda boring I thought. Not anymore. It was fun to watch Fraser learn as well, love these interviews.. reminds me of the old Hubble Hangouts from Tony 10 years back.

I would love to see this data incorporated into Universal Sandbox2 and Microsoft Research's Worldwide Telescope, the WWT virtual telescope.

Gaia 2.0 should be two in sync infrared survey space telescopes at Jupiter's Lagrange point 4 & 5.
This should give instant parallax and the dust in the Martian orbit wouldn't be in the way either.
Gaia 3.0 at Saturnian Lagrange points 4 & 5, Gaia 4.0 at Uranian Lagrange points 4 & 5, Gaia 5.0 at Neptunian Lagrange points 4 & 5, and you'll have the sky covered. :)

Wow this is amazing stuff. I wonder why Gaia doesnt get the coverage in the science media/media compared to other big missions ? Perhaps because survey missions are not as sexy as some other missions or because ESA doesnt have the same marketing budget as say NASA does.

I am seriously considering creating a 3D searchable representation of this Data if possible. I keep running the idea over and over through my head and it would likely be childsplay for me assuming the data isn't a complete shitshow to parse like Covid data was. More concerned with my computer melting attempting to search and plot it however its probably not as bad as it would first appear. I need the raw data though does anyone know where I can find the raw so I can look through it to see what I might need to do in order to parse it, plot 3D spheres in their proper places etc.

Hey Fraser. Question. Were all the Solar system planets formed within the same “window” of time and if so what is that determines a planet’s axial spin? Why do some spin faster or slower, eg Venus spinning real slow versus Earth or Jupiter that spin faster? Is this something to do with past encounters?

Wow.... a map of our galaxy. Thanks ESA. 👍

Amazing interview, it was said that it was only 2% of the sky, what is stopping Gaia from seeing the other 98% is it position or limits in range or spectrum that it can see ?

what is below the earth if the sun is aligned on our side ways I mean what could we see if we see up or down the earth

Does GAIA capture ephemeral events? Like, the Kilonova, or DM lensing events?

Hey Fraser! Is there any object in the universe that we know is travelling (or can theoretically travel) at relativistic speeds?

Hey Fraser,

I just read about Hoag’s Object and you popped to mind. I’ve heard you say on numerous occasions that we would see evidence of advanced civilizations if it were possible and hence you believe (and have helped convince me of the same thing) that we are the only advanced civilization in the universe. Could Hoag’s Object be a type 2-3 civilization reorganizing it’s stars to better serve itself. What of this object makes it scream that it isn’t by some sort of extra terrestrial design? Or do we just not know?

Would love to hear your thoughts on it! Keep up the good work!

I wonder how much of our solar system you can devine just from perturbations of the sun?
