First saw this movie on DVD way back in 2005 and I was absolutely stunned by it. It's the best and most beautiful movie ever made. Just watching this scene alone makes me cry because I'm so overwhelmed by the stunning scenery, sword fighting and especially Broken Sword's love for Flying Snow. Breaking off the fight to remove the drop of water off Flying Snow's ever so beautiful face is emotionally powerful.

One of my favorite parts of this fight scene is Nameless' reaction to seeing him wipe the tear/water drop off her face and he just slams the brakes on his majestic water walking and spirals out of control haha

Such effective storytelling through the course of this fight. With the opening dialogue of Emperor Qin to Broken Sword stopping the fight to continue to mourn over Flying Snow. Just beautiful, this is movie is a forgotten gem.

I think its a shame the beautiful tragedy in this movie is so often dismissed by viewers citing this scene absurd. It's the perfect presentation of chinese myth and wuxia, where heroes do downright magical things because they are so skilled and are honorable to a fault. Even if you are not even a little bit familiar with legends of flying swordsmen it is no different than many western legends of heroism of killing cyclopes and dragons. Difference is rather than what often is seen in western cinema, where filmmakers tend to ground the events to gritty reality, this movie embraces the poetry of the myths, the legends, the embellished tall tales or even lies to focus on the emotional charge around it and that makes it beautiful. A complete masterpiece.

Hero is so unsung! It's such a stunningly beautifully movie. My baby sister who isn't into martial arts movies like me even said she was taken aback at how pretty it was. The use of colors was mind blowing!

Another thing portrayed here is the essence of the fight. When the droplet fell on Flying snow, he withdrew even though he knew he could get killed. But this is price he had to pay to protect beloved Snow. But Nameless showed even greater restrain by changing the course of the sword, this in turn means he had to sacrifice himself too, hence the camera emphasis on more droplets from his chin due to his splurge in the water. It typifies the entire story, Broken sword showed them from the start what sacrifice was needed. And in a momentary realization Nameless came to the same conclusion, only difference is that instead of water droplets in the chin, he sacrificed his life to protect the King. This movie is the peak of Chinese Story telling.

This movie exemplifies that you don't need crazy special effects to make a movie amazing! The simple costume colors, the martial arts, & the story is utter perfection!
There's so much CGI in movies now, this kind of creativity is virtually non-existent in the entertainment industry.

I think that the warrior ethos described by the emperor is subtly being presented here.

1st the warrior is fighting with a sword and exhibits great skill

2nd the warrior can use anything as a weapon and that thing becomes an extension of his skill, in this case the water.

3rd the warrior no longer needs to fight and peace becomes more important. This is shown when a random drop of water, a weapon, turns on someone he loves. He drops his sword and ignores the fight.

There are levels here that the movie captures so beautifully.

I love how for all the sounds being uttered in this scene, they are merely to punctuate the deep, profound silence in the backdrop.
