Catholic teaching on IVF

What is the Catholic Church's teaching on In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)? Really, it's the other side of it's teaching on contraception, which is this: sex and babies go together. In this video we're going to unpack Catholic teaching on IVF and dig into some of the moral arguments that surround it. Let's take a look.

Fr. Mike Schmitz says “no one deserves to be a parent.” Ooh, that ones hurts. But it’s true.

If you truly believe a child is a gift from God… you will not force it (except through adoption). A true Christian knows that we do not deserve anything, not anything at all. Not even our own natural-born child. Everything we have is a gift.

I have always known procedures like IVF were wrong but struggled to find a way to explain it. The way you put it is quite eloquent. Thanks!

Thank you for discussing this important topic from a Catholic perspective. It's important to understand the reasons behind it.
God bless you, your family and your mission 🙏

Man, it was mindblowing when you explained the mystical union between Mary and Jesus, as the new Adam and Eve, and its relation with the mystical generation of the beloved son, incarnated by John. This opens so many doors for understanding more deeply the role of Jesus and Mary in the church's ministry.

That's so beautiful! I knew of the teaching of Christ giving birth to his bride through the Blood and Water spilled from His Heart on the Cross, but I never thought about that Blood and Water, as the seed for the bride, giving birth to the Beloved Disciple (At one level of course, John the Apostle, but even more, each member of the Church)!!
I also loved the extrapolation of Christ's demand that "what God has put together, no man must separate, " as not only a valid, legitimate marriage, but also the union of sex and procreation. How beautiful!

IVF is reproduction without union and contraception is union without reproduction... Understanding both is important, but we should not change God's way... And if we fall, we should ask for forgiveness... God is love!!!

YES!!! Thank you for this! Along these lines, When I was in labor with my first, I did not want an epidural because there is a purpose to the pain set by God, and if the water and blood thru the birth process didn’t marry with actual suffering (at least some, not necessarily all, because changing positions, walking, etc does help comfort level, but doesn’t completely eradicate all suffering), I just had a strong gut reaction that an epidural was spiritual “cheating” and had a very uneasy feeling about it. Our new life in Christ comes thru His grave and great suffering. He took no shortcuts. An epidural to facilitate new life felt like a spiritual shortcut. I don’t think I’m crazy??? Am I crazy? People thought I was, especially L&D Nurses, and the vast majority of friends-mostly Christians- had epidurals and watched movies, had parties, (or whatever) during labor. Didn’t give it a second thought. I wonder if women who get epidurals miss out on spiritual lessons and personal growth??? Just like couples who “idolize” having children and do it at all costs, because they don’t offer up their suffering and marry it to the cross…and they don’t see having children like a privilege, as opposed to a right.

In our marriage we practice the theology of the body, but i struggle to understand the reasons why the Church condemns artificial conception, in the context marriage. I understand the principle but cannot see exactly why. I miss a deeper argument. Why not condemn also other artificial uses of everyday life? Like chemically engineered medicines, etc.

IVF can get expensive, I know a lady who had it done at the age of 40. Her health insurance covered it. However, there are health risks in babies conceived through IVF.

Infertility, nothing to do with fluoridated water, chemicals in food, 5G or contraceptives ie pill. 🤔🤔

With infertility rates soaring, I have my doubts that this will remain Church teaching.

Quick question: you said that it was blasphemous that Jesus and Mary would be genitally united. How so? How do you respond to those who believe Jesus and Mary were married and there is a lineage from Jesus, DaVinci Code style?

Like abortion, "pro-life" Republican proposals to ban IVF will, of course, not effect or inconvenience well-to-do- women in the slightest. They will be able to get IVF or abortion, any time they want. It'll simply be a privilege of the rich. Even "pro-lifers" don't argue that, they just dismiss it with "rich people get away with stuff all the time"...but they admit it's true.

I'm going to assume that this video is comes from a well meaning heart. But to say that IVF is morally wrong and represents our desire to be God is silly. Should we also stop organ transplants? Blood transfusions and cancer treatments. This is not so far off from evangelicals that see medicine as evil. The problem with some religions is that they are far more concerned with ideas than they are with people. If there is a way to help people live better lives, why would you not offer the help?

Why are you so fearful of human beings taking control of their lives???? To have children. To NOT have children. God gives us the ability to master this.
