I read in a old magazine where this song originated the history behind it. It was not a Christmas song at all originally. It was a folk song that a type of poor illiterate gypsy girl was singing on a corner somewhere in the Ozarks or apllaision mountains A man heard her singing and wrote down the words. He said it was so beautiful the simple way she sang the song. She was a poor ragamuffin collecting coins. It is one the most simply worded and beautiful songs that are sung about jesus our savior. It's a song that is hauntingly plain simple and true. I ve always loved it from when I was a child. And I can close my eyes and picture the poor gypsy child singing it somewhere in the cold mountains as she was looking up into a clear starry night. And wondering..wondering... how Jesus our savior came to die for us...poor honery people like you and like I. Merry Christmas everyone!

Whenever I hear this song, I imagine it being sung by a little boy walking though a garden during spring, like Easter time. I don’t know why, but that’s just how I picture it.

Nice.  But if you have faith, and by that alone shall yee know them, then you don't wonder, you don't wonder about anything.  Everything is is so easy when you don't have to think, don't have to wonder or wander.  Actually I like this song very much.  Even if it's heretical by Christian standards.
