GTA 6 Why Is Florida Called Leonida And What It Means- GTA Lore Explained

Me analayzing the new name of Leonida replacing Florida in the GTA HD Universe world. I explain my thoughts on it and why I think the name was changed.

I honestly think they changed it so that they can stay consistent with using fictional state names rather than real state names, and I personally agree with this change. Liberty, San Andreas, and Leonida flow together better than Liberty, San Andreas, and Florida imo.

I believe the change to Leonida from Florida is probably the same reason they change the name of the FBI to FIB and C.I.A to I.A.A easier to parody and less likely to pushback from who they are parodying in the game

The thing is rockstar have always done this with cities and states they havent touched before and it's mostly down to staying consistent with the rest of the universe like it would feel strange having the real state name used when they havent before in an actual gameplay setting. Same thing in red dead they call states by their real names that are not present in a physical manner

As a Miami Native, I just want to mention something on the seal for Leonida. Notice how it says Dale on the bottom, or Vice County on the sides. It might be called Vice-Dale County like how Miami-Dade county is called. Also, Miami-Dade County doesn’t have a Sheriff’s Office YET, but in 2024 we will. Also the corrections badge is very identical to the Miami-Dade County Correctional badge. That’s another good lore. Again, as a Miami native, the attention to detail in the trailer alone, ESPECIALLY on the Correctional seal is astounding. I am SO STOKED for this game.

I personally like the name change, it covers them legally in the end, because they can always say "well no, this isn't Florida, it's Leonida, it's different." Which is why all the cities and states have fictionalized names.

I think that changing The name from Florida to Leonida could be that Rockstar wanting to have something new and original that is now only in this new Grand theft auto "HD Universe"

Betrayal is a large part of GTA lore. I believe there will be a choice of betrayal much like gta 5. "Jason" betrayas Lucia or vice versa

Yeah. I agree. Most likely Rockstar would include a reference to Tommy Vercetti as an old mob boss from a bygone era, just like they indirectly mentioned Grove Street families and their fate in GTA 5 in-game dialogue.

Vice city itself is mentioned in GTAV if you carjack a specific npc they say their moving back to vice city

What also plays into the potential big betrayal element of GTA 6 story is that Lucia and Jason explicitly state in the trailer “trust”, meaning they can't trust no one else but each other. Why else would rockstar put that exactly at the end of the trailer to show them.

Changing the name to Leonida is dope in my opinion. You gotta think, vice city is in this state with surrounding states as well. We might get Cottonmouth (aka Georgia) in it too. This is a slight error that I don’t think Rockstar thought through in the first part of the gta series.

Whenever Rockstar makes a game about florida, they've made not one. But TWO lore inconsistencies. It's like the spirit of the Florida Man haunting them everytime they make anything Florida related.

Jokes aside, I don't think that having Florida named "Leonida" in the HD Universe is that big of a deal. Considering that you can just think that Niko saying that he's from Florida sarcastically is an equivalent to saying "I'm from Silvervale" or some other wacky place you can think of.

First gta 3d game is in Liberty City (GTA 3), and last 3d game is set in Vice City (GTA Vice City Stories)
Also the first GTA HD game is in Liberty City(GTA 4), and GTA 6 will be set in Vice City/ Leonida.
GTA 3d universe timeline is from 1984 until 2001, which is 17 years
While GTA HD universe is also 17 years, from 2008 to 2025, probably.

I prefer the name changes. Florida is mentioned in GTA 5 even with the Moorehead Rides Again TV show and I am pretty sure there is a song with California in it's title as well. It is a little concession you gotta make. I like the fictional names because it makes the world seem more authentic. I hope they eventually bring in RDR 2 states into the GTA universe too. It would be cool to see Lemoyne(Louisiana)/San Denis(New Orleans) in modern day.

Something interesting to note is that the Francis Air website from the 3D era says that Vice City and Miami are BOTH destination options, implying Miami does exist elsewhere.
Also, two other notable retconns from the 2D era.
San Andreas was originally just a city based on San Francisco. This was retconned in GTA SA to be an entire state, with San Fierro now being the San Fran analogue.
The equivalent of State of New Jersey was State of New Guernsey in the 2D era. The 3D era changed it to the State of Shoreside in reference to Jersey Shore, and then the HD era changed it to State of Alderney.

Liberty City, San Andreas and Vice City are all places you can visit in GTA1. My guess is that Miami was never meant to be the actual city in gta vice city that was just the tease. These made up names for cities were always part of the series since the very 1st game.

Also one detail in the GTA VI trailer is that in the shot where Lucia is holding some cash and on the notes it says: "United States of Paranoia". This may be another retcon as in the previous GTA games the US was referred to by its real life name.

Edit: I honestly don't care if the new state is called Florida or Leonida but I just wished that it was matched to one state cause it's Leonida now but Niko says Florida in GTA IV kind of a lore hiccup In my personal opinion
