Shanghai Tower, which was started to be built in November 2008 and completed in 2015, is located in the financial center of Shanghai, Lujiazui peninsula, in Pudong, the business and commercial center stretching along the eastern bank of the Huangpu River. It is the second tallest building in the world and the tallest in China. The tower is owned by a consortium of Chinese state-owned companies. Designed by Gensler, the 632 meter high 128-storey (5 basement floors) tower has a total area of 540,000 square meters, 380,000 square meters above ground level. The tower is a mixed-use building built with layered construction and qualified as "sustainable".

As the bearing system of the tower, which consists of 9 zones on top of each other, an "outrigger frame system" consisting of external supports connected to a reinforced concrete core (30x30m), arches connecting external supports and mega composite columns was used in 12 to 15 floors.
