The Clutton Stone is believed to be a stable
stone. These stones have been used since the
18th century to raise hay or other animal feed/
bedding away from the floor to prevent access to
rodents. Judging by its design, it is one of the
earlier examples. Therefore, its use can be
estimated to date back to the mid 1700's at the
beginning of the family farm. It would have been
carved and shaped from local Bath sandstone.
The stone remained on the farm beyond its use
as a stable stone. During the early 20th century,
from around 1900's - 1950’s, Henry’s
grandfather Bernard can recall the stone being
used as a test of strength during the hay making
season. Local farm hands would often help bale
and load the hay by hand into a large horse and
cart, prior to tractors and trailers. In return for
this, some would receive payment in produce,
such as cider. Bernard can recall that if a farm hand was able to lift the stone from the ground during down time from collecting the hay, they would receive extra cider or cheese.
