“Take The A Train" is a jazz standard written by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington which became the signature tune of the Duke Ellington orchestra. Anita O’Days fabulous version of the song is on her 1958 studio album “Anita O’Day Sings The Winners”. O’Day was one of the best scat singings in the business and offers us a small sample here.

Anita O'Day was completely different from any other female band singers of her day because she refused to wear an evening gown and opted to wear a skirt and band jacket instead. For a singer without a great range, she has the most incredible artistry, a wonderful gravel like tone and an uncanny natural ability to scat sing. It is a shame that because of her management and lifestyle choices that she doesn't have the same mainstream legendary status as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday or Sarah Vaughan. Those who listen to classic jazz know who she is. Enjoy! Thanks For Your Comments.
