How Green Ideology Sank a Ferry and Wasted Millions

Germany’s ambitious attempt to replace a reliable diesel-powered ferry with an emissions-free solar model backfired, wasting millions in taxpayer money. The $3.3 million solar-powered ferry, Munde 3, was supposed to usher in an era of eco-friendly transportation but instead increased carbon emissions. The ferry’s solar panels, intended to reduce the carbon footprint, acted as a sail in the wind, rendering the ferry nearly useless. The outdated diesel-powered ferry was sold, only to be repurchased for nearly six times its original sale price after the solar-powered model failed. This fiasco highlights the pitfalls of prioritizing green energy initiatives over practicality, with more harm done than good. It serves as a cautionary tale of what happens when virtue signaling and environmental ideology supersede common sense and cost-effective solutions, wasting taxpayer money on unworkable ideas.

The officials that decided to buy the new ferry owns stock in the company that made the "green" ferry. They all get kickbacks to push this green trash

Government waste because of ideological fervor. Such blatant incompetence.

I lived in Germany in the 80s. “Solar” and “Germany” together in a sentence is funny. We often went WEEKS without seeing the Sun. Yes, even in Summer.

They got rid of a reliable transport and got a expensive solar parking dock

Things that require massive amounts of energy to manufacture and materials that require mining are never carbon free.

I'm having trouble believing these people are that stupid. There's got to be money laundering involved somehow.

I'm surprised someone didn't propose mounting large gas-powered outboard motors to the sides of the electric driftwood ... ferry.

If you made a huge purchasing mistake like that in a private company you would rightly get the sack but do it in public office wasting millions of dollars/euros of taxpayer money and it’s okay !

I bought an electric lawn mower and have been very disappointed. Like you said it does not pick up pine cones or leaves. It also doesn't pick up the cut grass very well. I will probably stick with it since I have a small yard and don't want to spend more money. Another issue is if you forget to recharge the battery and you can't mow the entire lawn!

Probably the same German politicians that laughed at Trump when he told them not to rely on Russian natural gas.

Hey Germany, How our your energy prices and economy going? I here not too well.

Here is economy is working as well as your new electric ferry.

OMG, the Missunde III looks ridiculous. It requires 2 people to operate, where the old ferry used 1. It also takes twice as long to cross the river as the old one. It came in over budget (of course), initial cost was 2.5M, final cost 3.9M. When they launched it, the champagne bottle did not break. Oops. All kinds of upgrades are now needed to the piers and the guide cable.
