IGCSE Computer Science 2023-25 - (2b) Data Transmission - 2.2-2.3 Data Transmission and the USB
Computer Science Syllabus
Cambridge IGCSE™ (9–1 0984) (A*-C 0478)
For exams in 2023, 2024 and 2025.

TOPIC 2 : Data Transmission:- 2.2 and 2.3
Data is frequently transferred from one device to another. The two
devices could be in the same building or thousands of kilometres away.
Irrespective of the distance travelled, the transmission of data needs to be
considered with respect to:
How the data is transmitted, how can errors following transmission be detected and can the data be recovered and the role of encryption to make sure data that falls into the wrong hands can’t be used.
It is also important to consider ways of checking for errors in data once it
has been entered into a computer.
ANSWERS TO THE QUESTIONS ASKED:
Remember here we are only talking about Serial or Parallel Transmission types, so speed and distance are the key factors. In the first question the printer is close to the computer, but is speed of data transmission important? In the past Parallel would have been the obvious choice but now a USB Cable would be the correct solution...this would be the same for the weather station question. Again the third question is a little confusing; ideally parallel would be the best option, but again a USB Serial Cable wins with it being universally compatible. The final question relating to internal components can only be parallel due to distance and speed required... I do hope this helps
