Starbucks Corporate Reps Storm Out of Union Negotiation Over Virtual Attendees

"After months of delays, the first day of collective bargaining between Starbucks and Starbucks Workers United ended before negotiations even began.

Representatives for the Seattle-based coffee shop conglomerate abruptly stood up and ended meetings with workers from all five of the unionized stores that were scheduled to bargain on Monday. In each instance, the company’s representatives objected to the digital presence of members of Starbucks Workers United’s national bargaining committee who were observing the in-person meeting over Zoom.

Starbucks is being represented in negotiations by lawyers for Littler Mendelson, the massive union-busting firm that has run its anti-union campaign."*

They’ve done this several times. They moved the location of some talks across the country one day before the meeting and not allowing virtual attendance. People were expected to drop their lives, buy last minute tickets and fly across the country.

All occupations should be unionized! All workers should have a voice!

Support your local coffee house. Screw corporate franchises!

In Australia the union would have taken Starbucks to court with the negotiations starting well above the minimum wage of $22/hr.

The representatives have names. They are not "Starbucks". They are people. They should be held to account by their peers and neighbors if no one else will.

I don't patronize Starbucks, because they charge $12 for a coffee and can afford to pay workers a living wage.

They don’t want it recorded so they can lie

Capitalism has one big problem: the greed of capitalists.

Honestly they just need to keep pushing. The fact that they even got on the negotiation table at all tells me Schultz is getting desperate and it's only a matter of time.

I'm a third generation Union man who has been involved in Union negotiations, this is a standard tactic of those that don't want to negotiate. Keep the pressure on, even increase it if you can. And publicize every misdeed by the corporation! The last thing they want is bad publicity

And this is why I haven't been to a Starbucks in multiple years.

Time to strike and call for a national boycott!

This looks really unprofessional, actually. Generally contracts between a union and the business are settled by professional arbitrators acting as go betweens for both parties.

I used to buy coffee and treats daily for my eleven employees at a nearby Starbucks. Now, we go to an independent local coffee house here in coastal California where the coffee is superior (fair trade), the whip cream portion much bigger. I do not like "union busting."

They didn't want to be recorded, this is something that should have been agreed upon beforehand.

I'm not buying any Starbuck items or coffee ever again. I used to love this company.
