I hear the 'horn' the eventually would be used for Runnin' with the Devil. You can also hear Michael Anthony's wonderful chorus in the background, David's Madness (That's a great thing), Alex's Cool Drums and last but not least Eddie's unforgettable brilliance. Gene Simmons heard it and knew it, but Warner Bros. and Ted Templeman sealed the deal. And the rest, as they say, is history. RIP Eddie Van Halen. You were one of a kind.

THIS IS HEAVY METAL for 1976, including ROLLING DRUMS, and the CHUG guitar, even at 0:54 David Lee Roth GROWLS first growl in rock metal history.

Should have used this version on Diver Down or basically any album before 1984. The tone was totally changed for that album. This is far superior.

Gene Simmons interview brought me here. He compliments Edward a lot as a one in a lifetime player and a good human being.. Also supports Dsvid for his integral part of the magic. This is amazing!

Edward is the modern day Mozart, Beethoven, Hendrix wrapped in 1. Undeniably a once in a century talent!

For some reason, I was never compelled to seek early Van Halen demos until this past week, and wow, I've missed out on this gem. The 1984 version of this song was always my favorite VH song, but felt like such a tease by being so short of a song regarding the number of verses and choruses. This is the version that should've ended that album.

I actually prefer this version much more than the 1984 studio release

Gene Simmons brought me here. On a recent interview he was talking about the demos. He said, LISTEN to HOUSE OF PAIN....it Rocks, makes the released version tame by comparison. Ol Gene is right! this is heavy! Love this version!

Nothing sounded like this in 1976, Eddie sounds like he’s in a future decade. And the band ROCKED, Gene was on point with these guys. What an exciting time for music, no hip hop or rap anywhere to ruin your day…

Dam this version is better than the one on 1984!!!! I hope this will be an official release on an expanded Van Halen 1 album at some point.

Man, Gene Simmons said this song is what he considers probably his all time fave Van Halen songs and I had to check ot out, and I would absolutely agree w him. I hear touches of Black Sabbath and even Ronnie James Dio through the track. Pretty good stuff ✨ RIP Eddie Van Halen Forever

This is better than the 'official' version, more alive, and faster I think.
