6 Months of Org Mode Nearly Broke Me (Emacs Life)

It's not just an Emacs flex, org mode can help you manage a project like you wouldn't believe. But should you use it for everything? Can it withstand whatever you can throw at it? I put it to the best test I could with my limited experience and understanding of such things, and this is the result. I go through the whole painful process bit by bit. And you can decide if org mode does it for you.

For syncing you can use syncthing to your phone running orgzly, nothing will be stored by a third party.

Thing is, I type grocery lists or any other simple TODOs much faster in something like doom emacs or spacemacs, than on a real piece of paper.
So for me personally org modes use for simple things is nearly as practical as its use for project planning and work-related stuff, or note-taking.

As much I love how to can customize emac to your liking the problem for me is sharing. For my significant other we need to have a shared calendar. For teams, I need to be able to share and have team members comment/edit documents. It will be a hard sell yet alone teach each person to use eMacs. Especially videos. I live in a world where I am on multiple computers and smart phones and for me being able to access my files from anywhere is critical. Yes, for sure I can configure eMacs to do it but I am not as technically inclined as my some hardcore eMacs user.
The key take away is that everything is a tool. You can mine your metal, smelt it, design it and have the ultimate tool. Or you could go to the hardware store and buy the tool and start doing the thing you had to get done. Just like anything each tool has it purpose. But in the end the tool purpose is to make things. So focus more making the thing and less on making the tool.

I agree with you. I find all these things cool as well. And I spent soem time setting thme up. But do I actually use it to the extent I thought I would? No

I struggle to replace the functionality of Things with anything else. All I use are the areas on down with todo “managers” that I schedule into the today list. I then run my day from there and adjust the managers when necessary.

Cool video. I an just getting started in using org mode. Any tutorials or anything that particularly helped you?

I am using doom emacs for some of the evil mode keybinds and other things. Slowly but surely I'm starting to understand how to do a bit more.

Playing around with org roam but haven't quite figured out enough for that just yet
