First you teach me power bins. Now this?! You're forever elevating us creators! Thank you for that!

It's Smart Bins for Dummies! The number of times I've had to riffle through hard drives to track down a sound clip or something used in a previous project. This is the perfect solution. Thanks for your most excellent tutorial.

Wow. Finally, a proper walkthrough of how to use the bloody Smart Bins. Best Resolve tutorial I've seen in a long time.

I've always thought smart bins were too complicated and never got around to using them, but after this video, it's gonna take me 5 minutes to set up, and will probably save me hours of sifting through my footage.
Thank you again my friend ❤️

I'm fairly new to Resolve and am a little impressed with myself that one of the first things I (accidentally) learnt about and have been using is the 'smart bins'. Boy, does it make editing and clip organisation feel buttery smooth

Smart bins makes your life easier.

I used to do data management on set a lot, I had a folder structure that I had built over the years where there was a folder for pretty much everything pre created.
I had the main folder with the project name, inside it a folder for the Audio and one for Video.
Inside the video folder I had a folder for every camera used, if we used the same camera model more than once we named them. Inside it a dated folder for each day of shooting, inside each dated folder I had a numbered folder for each time we dumped a card with the identification of the specific memory card used. Other than the folders for the cameras I had a folder for anything we might need like assets or stills.
Inside the Audio folder I had a simpler structure, just a dated folder for each day of shooting with the dumped audio card in it, there was a folder for on set sounds that we recorded (room tones, steps, doors and so on), ADR, Music, Assets.

There were folders for everything. A few times editors asked for me specifically because they knew my structured folders.

When you wanted to bring the project in your editing software you just took the project folder and dropped it in the app and the folder structure would stay the same.

At one time I started messing with Automator to add metadata like star ratings for clips based on the script notes, tablets were starting to be a thing so I worked a few days with a script to create a sheet with drop down menus in excel so the script would just have to select infos instead of writing everything with the terrible tablet keyboard, that could be referenced by Automator to fill in some infos (shot types, actors in the shot, star rating for how terrible the actors were, etc).

Unfortunately contracts started to get scarce so I stopped doing data management on sets.

Awesome as always. I've seen them, and sorta knew what they were for, but had no idea they were so flexible! Thank you!

Alex! I just got myself into video editing (started 3 months ago) and you're one of the content creators who influenced me into drinking the Resolve Kool-aid. It was the right choice - saying this not only because I'm loving DaVinci Resolve but because of your tips and tricks which makes it effortless when I'm working on my content.

Disclaimer: My content still needs improvement - Alex has nothing to do with it. Once they're better, then it was influenced by the stuff I learned from this channel.
