🏫Prof.SUMIOKA's One-minute Philosophy! L34 BUNDLE OF PERCEPTION
Hi, how d’you do!
“Professor SUMIOKA, what is BUNDLE OF PERCEPTION ?”
As a radical Empiricist, Hume insisted there is no ‘I’ even as TABULA RASA. It is at most BUNDLE OF PERCEPTIONS such as impressions and ideas. According to him, even causality is just CONSTANT CONNECTION between ideas.
“What's it all about?”
Descartes argued that, as long as there are various thoughts, ‘I’ surely exists as the basic subjectivity. Locke also thought before all experiences we have a blank TABULA RASA as ‘I.’ However, Hume insisted we have only impressions and ideas, but no ‘I.’
According to him, recognition is the combination (verification) of the impression of an external experience and the idea of internal thought (memory). And in internal thinking, ideas are associated in SIMILARITIES, OPPOSITES, DEGREES, and QUANTITIES. Moreover, through an experience of external impressions, they are unified in SAMENESS, POSITION, and CAUSALITY.
However, causality is, in fact, just CONSTANT CONNECTION or repetitive proximity so that we cannot recognize the external necessity. We rather catch there a glimpse of the subjectivity of belief.
“What do you think?”
Perhaps ‘I’ or personality may be rather the bundle of prejudices.
“Professor SUMIOKA, I got it well, thanks!”
