I become a Product manager by becoming an intrepreneur in a large enterprise with the backing of a great QA Manager. As a developer, I built an automation testing tool for our non-technical QAs that became the main tool for all of our environments. Though I built/maintained the product the ux and roadmap were dictated by a lot of user research with our QAs.

I am currently working as a pharmacist and have just recently landed a role as a PM within my organisation. I agree, being an internal hire is less risky for hiring managers as you will more than likely know the product already.
