MERIDA Frame Technologies: HYDRO FORMING SYSTEM (HFS)

Hydroforming is a way of creating complex tube shapes. It works by expanding a plain metal tube into a mould by pumping a very high-pressure mixture of oil and water inside it. This mixture forces the outer skin of the tube in the mould to conform exactly to the inside of the mould. The pressures used are huge at around 10,000psi – that’s well over a hundred times what's in a road bike tyre. Hydroforming means we can design frame shapes that would be extremely difficult if not impossible to fabricate out of regular tube or sheet aluminium. It allows us to create organic-looking designs that also work exactly how we want them to, minimising waste and reducing weight to make strong, functional and good-looking bikes.
