Chins are old school. Back in the day everyone at the gym where I trained did chins and barbell rows. Those were the two basics of a back routine. The only problem with chins is that the more weight you pack on the more difficult they become. Nowadays it seems like no one does chins.

Dead hang ~> active hang ~> pull-up ~> squeeze at the top ~> control the negative ~> active hang ~> dead hang = rep

Close grip chin ups stretches lats more than wide grip pullups because of the angle of 180° of hands in the chin up as a pose to wide pull ups in which the angle is less.

The best Pull up variation FOR LATS is the neutral grip medium grip pull up. Wide grip and pronated grip requires and activates more of the upperback (traps and rhomboid)

Dead hang take the tension of the lats and puts it in the shoulder which is good for shoulder mobility and the closer your elbows are to the sides of your body the more your lats will be engaged. Therefore you width isn't ideal nor your dead hang cue. The way a pullup is done is shoulder width is ideal/hook grip to take out the forearm and have the lats activate more. Shoulders retracted and depressed to stabilize your shoulder. This allows for the bicep not to get full flexion which will also make yours lats do more work. If you feel it in your biceps your are doing the movement wrong. You bring your chest to a bar but you don't physically touch your chest if the goal is muscle growth. You will keep constant tension on the lats... Explosive on concentric and hold the isometric and than control the eccentric. Utilize the stretch reflex at the bottom to allow for optimal loading. If you don't utilize it you will not be able to get as much volume and other muscles will have to assist to get more reps in a set. Also mind to muscle connection..is a dumb thing to say, if your form is right you will feel it... If you don't have the muscle developed yet, you won't have the ability to have a mind to muscle connection until your build up a decent physique.

Peter every time I watch your vids I’m still amazed that you only weigh 195 or so. Great job.

I find the opposite to be true for me, wide grip pull up for upper back, close grip chinup for lats

I feel closer grip works better. Think of the lats as a rubber band stretching from behind the triceps to your lower back. With your hands further away from your ears(wide grip) the range of motion decrease, also applies in the bench press and you have a video affirming that. Also the biceps tire faster in a pronated grip than supinated so must times in your pull your lats don't get to failure. Shoulder grip, palms up is the way to go, and this is from an old school bodybuilding view point.

If you end in a dead hang you don't actually stretch the lats more, but you make the movement more upper back biased

Awesome video mate. Hitting the clavicle maybe harder for those with longer forearms. But I fully endorse what you say. I can't argue as your built like a house. So it works

Neutral grip medium width is actually far more lat specific

i experimented with weighted pull ups today (it was leg day) and i used a belt w a 10KG kettlebell. i felt a lot more stable and it felt a lot nicer. it didn’t feel heavier, it felt super nice and stable. gonna try increase the weight on my actual back/ bicep day (i was using a more bicep bias grip, normally i pull up w a wide grip so that’s why i might not have felt heavier)

Close grip pull downs or palms facing you pull ups close grip stretches the lats more as the hands/elbows travel further, dont take it from me, Dorian Yates said this himself and we cannot doubt his back

However I do both, also Yates style rows
