Показать описание
1066 was the turning point for English history.
It was the year that saw the end of the Vikings, and sort of the end of the Saxons and the start of the Normans.
So how did it happen?
Well, Edward the confessor died, so Harold Godwinson became King of England. But his brother Tostig Godwinson didn't like this, so he went to Normandy to try and raise an army to fight against the King.
Well, a guy called William Duke of Normandy heard that a new King of England was on the throne, who had a tenuous connection to the crown. He began hatching a plan to raise armies to take to England and try to become King himself.
Meanwhile, Tostig went to Norway to gain favour with Harald Hardraada the Viking. Tostig hoped that if Hardraada became King, he would make Tostig a powerful ally because he helped him.
So the two of them sailed over to England and up the River Ouse to fight some Saxons near York, at the Battle of Fulford.
The Vikings won, but King Harold was furious. He went up North with his own army and confronted the Vikings at Stamford Bridge.
Unfortunately, Harald Hardraada had left half his army guarding his ships, so the Vikings were easily beaten by the Saxons, ending the Viking Age in England.
Now King Harold had news that William of Normandy had landed in England, and was promising land and more to everyone he was meeting if he became King.
Harold had to march all the way from York to Hastings, with an army already exhausted from fighting the Vikings.
When the Battle of Hastings began, the Saxons did their best to defend using their trusty shield wall. But the Normans were persistent and broke through.
King Harold is shot through the eye and hacked to pieces, making William the victor.
With that the crown goes to William, who becomes known as William the Conqueror, or William I.
Got it? Great!
