Actually the Portuguese went to Japan in the 16th century to do trade by giving the Japanese firearms and converting the Japanese citizens into the Catholic Church but the Japanese kicked them out but allowed the Dutch to do trade in Japan because they weren't religious but until 1854 when the US forced Japan to open their ports and the Japanese did.

Fun fact: during the Edo Period, the Tokugawa banned all Europeans from Japan except the Dutch, and the Dutch had to promise that their relationship had to be purely economic. This relationship heavily influenced Japan over the next few centuries as they tried to Westernize to appease Europeans and show that they too were “the colonizers” and not “the colonized.” This included everything from science and medicine to fashion and music. This was all for naught in the end, as the Europeans never truly recognized the Japanese as an equal colonial power even up until World War II.

When Spain tried to invade Cambodia they brought some Japanese warriors to help them invade Cambodia.

A lot of people saying a lot of unnecessary stuff when it was just two simple factors

1- It was to far to make colonization long term sustainable with the technology at the time

2- They didn't need to, since Japan as a trade partner made them a lot of money

Colonoziation is a expensive practice that requires battles and lives so you can obtain resources.

Being trade partners allows you to get those resources without the war part.

So when a country meets a new country it really comes down to cost vs reward.

It was Portugal that introduced fire arms to Japan, so what if they had tried to invade instead?

It wasn’t colonized, that’s true. But european powers would not be european powers if the trade deals made with japan did not favor the europeans substantially. Also, the US forced the japanese into trading.

Japan was like, literally the other side of the planet from Spain and Portugal so it would've been impossible

In simple words, they had the same firearms but 4 times the population of Spain so they could never be colonized
