I wouldn't say we're German wannabes, but one has to understand we've been under German-speaking rule (Franks of Charlemagne, Holy Roman Empire, Habsburgs, Austria) over 1000 years until 1918. (Exception being a couple of years under Napoleon).
Only in the last 100 years we've become mostly associated with Serbs and other South Slavs.
At most we've had some association with Kajkavian Croats during the peasant revolts in 16th century, and Austro-Slavism in 19th century, but that's about it.

That happens when you’re under Austrian rule for like 1000 years!

Fun fact:
Slovenia is the only Slavic Language where they say numbers in German style.
So it is not twenty one, but one and twenty in Slovenian. Hungred twenty one in Slovenian is hungred one and twenty.

Yeah really depends on who you ask. Us from primorska either say we are colse with italy or close with the balkans but someone from up north would tell you we are closer to austria and then the central slovenians are the most patriotic.

I currently live in Friuli Venezia Giulia and love Slovenia and all the area really! There's a stratification of language and culture that is specific to this region, you can't miss it really! Come visit!

Simply untrue. Slovenia has been culturaly and politicaly included in the German/Westernised Europe ever since the principality of Carantania gave up its sovereignity to the Frankish Bavarians in the 9th century in exchange for military support against the invading Avars. Centuries and centuries of germanisation, attempted assimilation and german colonisation followed and, of course, left a visible mark on our culture and some subconscious aspects of our nation. But, dating as far back as the times of Primož Trubar, and then on a greater scale in the 19th century, there was a strong sense of national identity and sovereignity of the Slovenians, a great part of which was resisting germanisaton and enforcing our own culture.

Honestly, as a german, I think Slovenia is one of the most interesting coumtries in Europe, which also has some of the best food because of this mix of italian, austro-german and balkan influences.

Whenever in Geoguessr I think "Well, that looks beautiful! And everything is so nice and clean, almost like here in Switzerland" but I don't understand the words then it's usually Slovenia 😉

Also the social setting alegory is not accurate as Austria wouldn't be talking to us. It would talk with Germany and we'd be alone in the corner.

This is very true. When I was on my Erasmus (I'm Croatian), I hung out with some Montenegrin, Bosnian and Serbian people. We'd invite the Slovenian guys, but they did their own thing :P

Edit: the part about fighting is also true. The second I come back home, I default back to my nationalist spirit lol
