A tire when left exposed to the sun and weather will eventually dry rot, especially in hot tropical environments. In this video we will show you how to make your own Tire Covers out of Sunbrella Marine Grade Fabric from Sailrite. This is an easy sewing project that will prolong the life of your tires on your RV or trailer.

I want to commend you on this video. I followed along with the video and completed a set of 4 covers start to finish in a few hours. They turned out great... A couple of things I learned along the way included adding an additional 1/2" to the width of the rectangular velcro cover so that my covers lay correctly when closed, using the max / full tire diameter and width dimensions so the covers are easier to get on and off, and finally with my 205 15 trailer tires, the 60" material width was sufficient for the length of the boxing piece, allowing me to get the entire material needed for each cover out of a single yard of material.

Thank you for providing such excellent reference material for this and your other projects. This video made tackling this project so much simpler, quicker and (likely) more successful than doing it completely from scratch.

Thanks for posting these instructions. I was able to follow along and make covers for my teardrop trailer. I used a grey sunbrella fabric to blend with the metal of the teardrop.  I recommend being liberal with the dimensions. My first attempt I could not get the covers over the tire (in part my tire wells are very tight).  My not so elegant solution was to add additional width on the center strip. I added 4" and then was able to get the covers over the tire. If I did it again I would expand the dimensions  of the center section.

Why is the thread wound around the sewing needle? Thanks for the video!

At 2:48 that smoke alarm going off, tells you that she shouldn't be breathing in those fumes from that hot knife.
Cool job making the tire covers though.

App. how many yards of fabric would you need to make 4 covers (abou the size of the tires in the video) Trying to weigh out making my own vs buying. Thanks in advance!

If you are making a spare tire cover based on this design, could you use non marina grade fabric and waterproof it?

I know that the outside of the tire is exposed to the sun continuously as well as some of the tread when parked. What does covering the back of the tire accomplish?

if its not sun.. then its age... and age most of the time is the problems... my rule if its over six years old its time for new tires...

Thanks. As soon as I graduate from sewing school and sell my car to buy a $5000 sewing machine, I’ll create my tire covers. Or I’ll just use a Rapesco staple gun and finish in thirty minutes. Just saying.
