He’d gone crazy at this point. I’ve broken down the timeline of this movie by what I think it is, and I’ve always assumed he was 35 at the time he killed Sam, 55 at the time Kate committed suicide in front of him, and 92 at this point here. Over the decades he had slowly deteriorated and became more and more out of it.
