Free video guitar setup lessons on setting guitar intonation guitar and bass guitar intonation of Stratocaster, Les Paul style guitars, and bass guitars, for those who want to learn tricks and secrets of guitar setup (adjust string height, adjust intonation) and get rid of guitar fret buzz.

Setting a strat guitar intonation adjustment is a pretty simple task you can see it in this instructional video. All you have to do is play a harmonic at the 12th fret, compare it to the note fretted at the same fret, and make sure the two notes match.

If the fretted note is sharp you will have to move the saddle at the bridge of this particular string away from the neck (toward the strap end pin) and if it is flat you will have to move the saddle toward the neck side.

But there are a lot of steps you should follow before you actually set guitar intonation before you adjust your guitar's intonation.

First to properly set your guitar's intonation you have to mount a new set of strings, adjust the truss rod adjust the string height at the bridge.

This will allow you to get rid of guitar fret buzz.

For how to change the strings on a guitar with a tremolo or whammy bar and how to set guitar bridge adjustment (action), adjusting the string height/action on your guitar, please check my other dedicated video on this channel.

Also to perform a correct intonation adjustment on your guitar you have to lower the pickups because pickups are built with magnets that attract strings by pulling them and this influences the guitar intonation adjustment.

Guitar intonation must be performed in the playing position or be careful to place the guitar on a table so that the gravity force does not influence the intonation setup like is shown in this video.

Other tips on how to set up a guitar intonation is you have to follow is allowing the strings to naturally set on the bridge saddles

Amazing. Been playing for upwards of 10 years. I've watched countless vidoes for repair, sound, tricks, and general maintenance, and this takes the cake. By far the best video I've ever watched for guitar knowledge!

Never thought about lowering the pickups first but that tip made the intonation much more accurate..Thank's for the tip. When the pickups are all the way down, my tuner settles down too. I just raised my pickups until my tuner started dancing then slowly backed down until the tuner steadied again.. The tone sounds great and every note on the fret board is right on. My Strat thank's you for the advice.

I have just replaced the bridge on my Mexican strat, adjusted the action and now it’s time to set the intonation based on your guidance. Really helpful, I learned a great deal here, thank you!

This is hands down the best video I have seen on intonation! It was really helpful that you explained the theory behind the adjustments while you demonstrated them. Many thanks from Ireland!

You showed me how to solve my intonation issue, saved me the expense of a professional luthier, taught me useful skills, and enabled me to avoid putting my Strat in the guitar hospital. It's also really satisfying to be able to do more than change strings and use a tuner. Thank you!

I agree with the last post you received 3 years ago, it reads "Amazing. Been playing for upwards of 10 years. I've watched countless videos for repair, sound, tricks, and general maintenance, and this takes the cake. By far the best video I've ever watched for guitar knowledge!" But i have been playing guitar for 48 years now. Awesome video dude.

Very good, I have been seting up strats for over thirty years. You explain it very well. There's always something new when you see different luthiers performing a setup.
Thank you, you are good!

You really took the mystery out of intonation for me. I had imagined it was something only a "Master Luthier" could be capable of doing!
Thanks, just going to watch your "Truss rod adjustment" video now and I might be able to save myself some money by being able to set up my own guitars instead of a music store doing it for me.

It makes me so very happy to see you recommending to pull the sharpness out of a string rather than to use the tuning machine. Stretching the strings is such an important part of getting the guitar settled and prepared to hold a tuning. Thank you for sharing your great love of music with all of us here. Warm regards - John

One thing I notice after intonation, is that my some of my notes when playing chords are a little sharp.... so I adjust again until the chords aren't sharp anymore, and everything is still in tune. That's when I'm finished intonating. It's obsessive but I can't stand flat or sharp notes on chords. All your guitar knowledge is very helpful, thank you.
