When I first got my BMW bike I was not impressed with its performance. Coming from inline 4s I missed that 'snappy' acceleration which just wasn't happening on the boxer BMW. BUT then I discovered that incredible torque they have pretty much the entire range, even with a passenger in the back I barely had to pull the throttle to go uphill vs with my inline 4s I had to constantly shift down to climb up a hill. Also due to the low center or gravity it is very easy to handle in curves. Great touring bikes!

43, 000 miles on my R 1200 RT. A lovely, reliable bike and engine, with wonderful balance and stability. I came from a V twin and a 6, and I’ve never ridden a more maneuverable bike.

The same reason applies to VW Beetle engines, Porsche engines and Subaru engines. The only difference is that some Porsche engines and all current Subaru engines are watercooled.

How are the Cylinders coming to the sides, one should be ahead and the other behind, I do not think BMW uses either Screw Gears or any type of Bevel Gear.\s.

Compared to the Suzuki vstrom 650 the BMW boxer engine and the manner in which they are manufactured they are unreliable. I own two gs 1200 BMW 1200, s and three Suzuki 650 vstroms, 05 06 and 07. Both BMW, s have suffered catastrophic engine failures of dropped exhaust valves plus three fuel pump electronic speed controller failures. All failures left me stranded and cost much monies to repair. My three Suzukis totaling over 200, 000kms have never had an issue. One USA to Peru and back, the rest South Africa circled plus Nabia Botswana and parts unknown. Only normal wear parts, never a break down.
