For a long time, the transportation within the Princes’ Islands of Istanbul (Turkey) was handled by bicycles and horse carriages – undoubtedly the islands’ most popular tourist attraction. Indeed, the use of fossil fuel vehicles has always been prohibited on the islands. But Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu said in December 2019 that the Princes’ Islands would no longer offer visitors horse-drawn carriage rides. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) took the decision to replace the phaetons by electric vehicles: the Adabüs. These are small electric shuttles fully integrated to Istanbul public transport system.

In this video, the Academy WebTV travelled to the biggest of the Princes’ Islands, Büyükada, to learn more about the causes and the consequences of this historical transition with Barış Yıldırım – IMM Directorate of Public Transportation Services –, İlker Aksoy – IETT Princes’ Islands Operations Manager –, Sevgi Çetinelli – Adabüs Driver – and some Büyükada residents.
