Just 4 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Agrinio, Aitoloakarnania, Western Greece, Greece. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024, at 12:59 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Trýfos (pop. 710) located 0 km from the epicenter, Katouna (pop. 2,200) 6 km away, and Amfilochia (pop. 4,000) 9 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Palairos (pop. 2,600) located 18 km from the epicenter, Vonitsa (pop. 4,700) 19 km away, Preveza (pop. 17,300) 32 km away, Agrinio (pop. 46,900) 37 km away, and Arta (pop. 21,900) 38 km away.
