"Why are we so scared of Ebola" one word: Media

The BIG lesson over Ebola surely is the great difference between Western and third world health systems. The average pet dog in the west gets better healthcare than the average human in the third world world.

I am so obsessed with the Black Plague! When I first found out about it I had to know everything there is to know about it! Yes, epidemics/pandemics interest me a lot!

I really find it annoying how whenever there's an epidemic people lose their shite and common sense. I also hate chaos and hysterical people so I really wish that if we're hit with a situation like in the movie Contagion, we actually act like the reasonable human beings we are, not like panicked freaks. Yes, the fear of having a disease like ebola and dying is natural and all. but that's why we have science and epidemiologists and doctors, real life heroes, fighting off this and many other diseases to protect us. We don't gain anything by freaking out and spreading misinformation. Or if something big happens, we start looting stores and pharmacies. Control is the key. And in all honesty, I'd more scared of being killed by some frenzied person during a pandemic, than the actual disease - if of course people really started acting crazy and looting/vandalizing stores, houses. As for this book, I've heard of it often, reading it's a good read, but haven't had the opportunity of reading it. I'm not really into epidemics and reading about them in fiction or non-fiction, but I might give it a try.

This book not only talks about Ebola but Marburg and how they figured out the different types of Ebola. It is a good read but can go into details of how those affected suffered from their sickness.

I'm more scared of Richard Preston's book on the topic of bio-terrorism and anthrax and the hyper-poxes, etc.
Ebola only travels through blood and bodily fluids, but anthrax and smallpox is much more infective and seemingly worse.

(Warning:Potentially graphic)
We should also remember that this these symptoms described in the book are GROSSLY exagerated and beyond worse case scenarios. Most medical professionals on the front lines in Africa report in the worst cases moderate blood in vomit or stool. People are not emptying their bowels with pieces of intestines, and they aren't tossing up black/red mystery fluid from their stomachs. This diesease IS disaterous, and DOES AND IS killing people, but the actual symptoms are scary enough to remind us that as a whole, we need to find a solution. Just my thoughts on the matter... still a great book; just more fiction than non-fiction.

Is that a poster or a painting in the top right corner? If so, why do you have it?

Even after ebola is supposedly eradicated, we should still be concerned. After all,  bubonic plague still turns up to this day! Diseases never go away entirely, they just become more treatable and turn up less in areas we are most likely to hear about it as a result.

I will like to point out that The Hot Zone does not just recall events in America, it also recalls events in Africa, and Germany. If you are going to talk about the book please don't just give a very small detail, I have done book reports on this book, I have taken quizzes and tests on this book, I have taken countless notes on it. This was literally the first book my class read in my environmental science class.
