Japan may be one of the first to falter due to a lack of child birth but this is actually a problem with every modernized nation.

Japan's problem are reversible with changes in culture. Having the population at dangerously low level is still better than to fill a country with undesirables, like in Europe and US.

Part of the problem with low birth rates is just how difficult it is for a mother to work full time AND have children AND keep the laundry done, feed the family, keep the toilets clean, wash the dishes, etc etc… unless women can devote themselves full heartedly to motherhood, I just don’t see how birth rates won’t continue to fall.

This has been an issue for years. I first learned about it around 2010. It is amazing some are trying to discredit Musk on this issue.

Lower population only concerns those who view people as their source of income. I live in Japan. I can assure you, children are deeply loved here. It’s a highly populated country. One factor often not mentioned, is there may be an intuitive function that fulfills balance.
Also, the way the governments of the world are acting like a parasitic corporation and tracking and taxing all transactions, discourages people from doing anything that creates new overheads.
Rather than go live in mars, we need observation, integrity, and new structures that respect sovereignty, limit governmental powers, reduce reasons and actuality of how much we give in $ to national structures. And, improve each nations ability to function autonomously without all these international back-room deals that lead to manipulation and blackmail.

Elon Musk reiterated, "The biggest issue in 20 years will be population collapse. Not explosion. Collapse".

The population of Japan in 1800 was 30 million. Today it's around 130 million. What's the problem with going back to 30 million? People were just fine back then, and with the tech we have today, they would be even better off today! Fewer people, less pollution, less congestion, less stress, less noise, more space, more food, more resources, less environmental impact.... more social and close societies... sounds bloody wonderful!!

I am 76 years old and have had three children but if I was young today I would choose not to have children at all. Several factors would influence my thoughts. Finances, climate change, rate of divorce, threat of war and over crowding right now. The Pandemic hasn’t helped either. The word ‘life’ doesn’t have that sparkle any more, it’s nose to the grindstone while the very rich get even richer. . And no, I am not a pessimist, just a reality check on how things are today. Meantime I am off to do my 15 km walk then back to my maths and grand daughters’ jokes.

I'm not brilliant like Mr. Musk, but I generally believe when the Net Reproduction Rate for any country/civilization falls below 2.0, the fall is primarily prompted by economic ( we can't afford to have children) or sociological (the future looks bleak) factors. Addressing either of these factors will have an impact on the Net Reproduction Rate.

It's nice to hear the conversation go in the other direction for a change. For decades we have been preached at about over population. So glad I ignored them lot's of times.

At least Japan doesn't replace its own population, so they may reverse it with a proper policy making.

I was reading an article recently where the author was explaining he thought we had nearly reached our maximum number of humans on the planet. His article was about education and economic improvements for men and women in third world countries and more working women. Apparently the more education and economic opportunities and positive health outcomes that comes with this leads to a lowering of the birth rate. It was not a doom and gloom article.

Japan and Philippines must cooperate with their economic and social needs thus minimizing the impact of this issue.🤔

Of course money is the biggest issue in low child birth - it just works differently than "specialists" imagined. Countries like Japan might be rich but the costs of living so exorbitantly high - that almost no couple can dream of having their own place to live. No place to live - no children, it's very simple. There very poor countries whose citizens lack everything but one thing that hose poor countries don't lack - is a place to live. As turns out - place to live is the most important aspect of starting family. It should be obvious actually. There are also MEGA poor countries whose citizens don't even a place to live - yet those countries still have high child birth - that is also obvious why - because those countries are so poor, their citizens can't realise any higher aspirations at this moment than having their family - so they do that - have kids - the only "joy" they are able to have

Few decades ago it was predicted (based on the then current data) that human population will keep on growing endlessly. Now it’s predicted that population decline will continue until no-one is left. Nature seems to balance things out - because we are part of nature even if we think we are above that.

Lol yes i believe the population in Japan will decrease due to the fact they particularly do not rely on the government and welfare. The mentality is not having tons of kids with no job or education like some modern countries cough cough somewhere really close to home. But eventually the country will be stable again

When Japan's population goes up for 2 years in a row, are they then going to say that Japan will eventually cover the earth with people?
