(distal gastrectomy)

A procedure in which the gastric antrum (distal third of the stomach) is excised.
Gastrectomies are further defined by the type of reconstruction used to reestablish gastrointestinal continuity.

(Examples of gastrectomy)
• total gastrectomy: The whole stomach is removed.
• partial gastrectomy: The lower part of the stomach is removed.
• sleeve gastrectomy: The left side of the stomach is removed.
• oesophagogastrectomy: The top part of the stomach and part of the oesophagus is removed.

(Examples of partial gastrectomy)
• antrectomy: 30% resection
• hemigastrectomy: 50% resection
• subtotal gastrectomy: 80% resection

(Examples of antrectomy)
• Billroth I procedure: Partial gastrectomy. The removal of a portion of the stomach from the upper left side to the lower right side. It can be fashioned in either an end-to-end or end-to-side manner.
• Billroth II procedure: Loop-type gastrojejunostomy (reconstruction). The gastric remnant is anastomosed to the side of the proximal jejunum, in an end-to-side manner.
• Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y anastomosis): Gastrojejunostomy. It bypasses part of the stomach and the duodenum.
