Well, you know that Trev loves a Naturehike tent - in fact as far as budget and lightweight tents go, Trev would even go so far as to say that Naturehike make the best backpacking and bike-packing tents there are. And Colin from Outdoor Gear Essentials knew this, and so contacted Trev to test out the Naturehike Mongar 2 20D batckpacking tent!

I love my Mongar 2! Top tip for packing it when hiking though: pack the fly sheet and inner in the main bag and it'll compress right down to the size of a melon, then pack the poles and pegs separately in your bag - fills the holes in your pack better 😁

If you run the top cross pole under the frame instead of over then it lowers the sides and gives you less airflow but a bit more protection.

The twist-locking clips are absolutely genius: I have friends who use this tent for winter camping, and the twist-lock clips are one of the main reasons they opted for this model. The most common clips rely on the elasticity of the plastic to clip onto the pole (sort of hooks that can bend open so that the pole can snap in). The problem with that is that polymer elasticity drops dramatically with temperature. At -15 °C, those hooks are VERY brittle, forcing the pole into them can easily snap them. This design, however, does not require the plastic clip to retain its elasticity to function, there's no bending required.

Used this tent in Iceland on the laugavegur and fimmvörðuháls trails. Performed great!

And yes, middle pole goes over. Two reasons:it rests on the pole instead of pulling on the rubber. And it's a bit tighter.

The inner tie offs make this tent very sturdy in the wind. Tent is symmetrical, so inner and fly go either way.

The loops of the inner can be put under the loops of the mat so you can set it up more quickly

Same one I just got! I missed what you said half way through cos all I could focus on was the clip you missed on the inner tent.

Absolutely love my Star River 2. Very similar but with the asymmetric height ends "inspired by" the Big Agnes Copper Spur as opposed to the symmetric design of the Mongar "inspired by" the MSR hubba hubba. Mine has the clips for the fly corners on both the inner and the ground mat corner tapes. Which means that you can absolutely do fly first or inner first depending on the weather. The Mongar looks like the vestibules are slightly larger which wouldn't be a bad thing. There is also a Mongar in 210T darker green for those looking for a stealthier option. Keep the tent reviews coming !

Should be getting mine today. I'll be using it in the Pyrenees this summer with my girlfriend. With two people in an actual 2 man tent I went with the all mesh inner to increase ventilation and reduce condensation. Hopefully this works!

there's also a 15D version of this tent, after weighting - total, including ground mat - 1.88 kg. Love the tent

This has been a great tent camped in all weathers and summit camps and never let me down would highly recommend if your after a 3 season tent. Never used in winter so can't say how it would perform

Just got mine today- came with absolutely no instructions so I appreciate you doing this video on how to set up!

I got the polyester bcs I hate the colors of the 20D. It’s bigger & heavier than I expected but it’ll do for now and I got it on sale for $99USD.

I’m only just getting started in backpacking from day hiking so this is fine for me for now. It seems like a tough little tent that can handle decently strong wind & rain. I look forward to using it this autumn!

Just the video I was looking for, my Mongar 2 arrived today and was a bit confused on the orientation of the brow pole. Thanks for sharing

Great review Trev. I wonder if they will be releasing other tents calling those Minger and Munter to go with the Mongar?

Hi trev I've got a couple of tents that use the top cross pole you said was tricky to hold and walk around tent to get to other side . I've found if ur stood one side just connect the opposite side first easily then press it down ur side and clip in real easy from one side . Hope that helps mate

Doesn't that white surface all around you keep you awake when you're trying to sleep at night/morning? I like darker interiors like I like to blackout my room at night when trying to sleep, I think the white amplifies the little light outside that there is. Great for readers I guess, but ppl generally have torches/lamps!

I’ve seen another video review of this tent where it shows that if you first set up the top central cross rod UNDERNEATH the main central arch you can the get the fly sheet/ outer tarp much closer to the ground and reduce air flow in the tent during cold weather.

There's also two metal rings on the outer fly that hook onto the cross beam. If you open the fly door and look directly up you'll see them, just helps to center the tent relative to the frame. One thing I'll say is that the fly is under a LOT of tension when clipped onto the cross beam. Also, the end of the cross beam has a sharp ish edge to it that is pressed up against the outer fly which looks a bit sketchy. It would be much better to see a fabric pocket that the cross beam can slide into instead.

Your review was the reason I bought mine! Thank you!

1) how is this compared to cloud 3? both at around same weight, but cloud 3 is spacier than mongar 2? (or which would u choose for 2 people camping?)
2) Or do u recommend cloud up2 over mongar 2?

Thanks for the review. It's a great tent and I just got mine yesterday. The color is pretty cool and it's very suitable for hot and humid country because any light color such as this light gray (almost white) color won't trap much heat in hot tropical camping sites here in South East Asia as opposed to darker colors. I'm enjoying every bit of your camping videos. Keep it up.
