It’s true. German football from 2012-2014 was something special. Both Bayern and the national team were machines. Dortmund were also extremely competitive in this period too

He’s one of my favorite players. Grew up with him being a winger to a center mid. Great player

He's so right. Germany used to be a team that can have a high caliber opponent hold the ball for 55-60% of the time and then once in possession play a few sharp passes and all of a sudden have a scoring opportunity.

Now the ball is passed around beautifully but neither scoring nor defending the own net is done productively.

Heynckes style gave me sleepless nights during Champions League as a Barcelona fan.

He is completely right, I don't understand what is wanted here in the comments. Jenep Heynckes' Bayern in the years he mentioned was unstoppable, two consecutive Champions League finals and one they lost with Hans Drogba. and winning the World Cup in Brazil, whose squad is based mostly on Bayern players. Pep came with the tiki taka, yes Bayern still looked great but the sting of German football is gone, and that's what Schweinsteiger is talking about

Let me say this, I do believe that Pep's style is one of the most effective styles in football, but that doesn't mean its always the best and doesn't mean that there aren't other ways of playing football. Look at history different styles, different formations, different philosophy etc...

He didn’t say that. He said Pep’s style of play was copied by teams in Bundesliga to the point that it corrupted their original style of play. He said the German teams have lost the essence of their football heritage.

I would say even Spain suffered post 2010. The Barcelona style was embossed on the Spanish side. It worked in 2010. But after that everyone figured how to play against them. It’s not an easy style to replicate other than with absolutely brilliant players at a certain age. Once it falls apart, hard to rebuild.

Same happened to italian national team with and after Prandelli in 2010. We won 2006's world cup because of our incredible defense, then came Barcelona's Tiqui Taca and everybody started saying that we had to play that way. Since then, every coach of the national team focused on ball possession rather that verticalization and scoring. We changed our historical soccer values, with terribile results.

People forget that the thing that ended the tiki taka era was the German high intensity pressing and counter pressing.

When Germans talk about football, it just feels different

100% agree. Barcelona is a slave of its own style (Pep's style comes from Cruyff's heritage in Barcelona). Barcelona doesn't have Xavi, Iniesta and Messi anymore and they keep trying to play the same way obviously without success. Real Madrid has won 14 UCL because Real is a 4WD. Knows how to shine, suffer, be superior and inferior and if the team gives 100% is proud in every situation.

This video is missleading. What Bastian means is that we focused a lot on certain style of playing at that time and didn't focus on the core values anymore. Germany always had good strikers and defenders, were are they now? Everyone wanted the false 9 while Pep always played with a true 9. (Etoo, Villa for example).

The culmination of the pep and germany mix happened in the 2014 WC. After that everyone tried to copy them and slowly but surely germany lost its identity.

100% right. People use to think i was crazy when I told them I didn’t want Pep in Munich. Germany was best in the world. They didn’t need to copy anyone. Yup Henkells had a machine for a team.

Germany used to build up with goal kicks and try to win the second ball . They were able to use overload to isolate when they had the ball followed by switching the point of attack . Out of possesion, they were counterpressing in the opponents half and used to man mark opponents in their own half while also setting themselves up for a quick counter attack .

The thing is that Bayer Munich club was perfect with perfect players before the arrive of Gardiola so it was all easy job for him as a coach.

Pep damaged Bastain so much that he ended up joining Man Utd..

And this is why I prefer Don Carlo to Pep.
A coach should adapt to the players and what he has at his disposal, not impose something completely different that does not suit that particular team.
