It has been declared as a landscape of special natural beauty since August 1983 (Government Gazette B 572/04-10-1983), while later it joined the European network of natural protection together with the neighboring forest of Meropi, the valley of the Gormos River and Oreokastro NATURA-2000 environment, with a high protection priority and code GR2130010. The name Zaravina comes from the name of the village of the same name which in the past was located downstream of the lake.
